Choosing an outboard motor used
30 years ago American manufacturers conduct market.Names outboard motor such as Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude and Chrysler, led the field competing with each other to produce larger and larger outboard motors. However, while this was happening, they were removing the smallest of outboard motors. These are the outboard motors that are sold in greater numbers and are often the first outboards many of us, buy. This being the case for many of us stick to the same brand (brand loyalty) we buy other outboard more over the years. The Japanese have seized on this and gradually Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and focus on small outboard engines Tohatsu began to take more than the leaders market. They achieved this dominance by improving the efficiency and reliability. And adding features to these outboard motors of small previously only available on larger engines.
Japanese manufacturers to spread the power band. They came to dominate again the market for outboard motors up to at least 20 HP. American manufacturers instead of competing with the Japanese gave up and decided to buy the drivers of Japanese and Badge as their own. Now the Chinese have entered the market. Basically do what the Japanese have previously, copying the best features of current engines and at the same time keep costs low.
So let us compare the engines usedoutboard that are available for those looking for an outboard motor for their boat. If we take a boat big enough for example, pegs 12, each outboard motor's pushing a reasonably heavy goods vehicles through the water. If we then take the outboard motor to:
Mercury 2.5hp, Mercury 3.5hp, 2.5hp Mariner; Tohatsu 3.5hp, 2.5hp Yamaha, Suzuki 2.5hp, 2.6hp Honda 2.3hp and Parsun. These outboards are 4-stroke engines, due to a European directive that prevents two shots to be European.Union sold. These outboards will provide a fairly wide range of engines available in the market for power dinghies.
To judge a boat motor used against several other tests were completed. A tensile test showed that mercury 3.5hp Tohatsu 3.5hp and were the most powerful to 90 pounds of thrust (both engines with the Mariner are virtually identical). The least effective was the 2.3hp Honda 66 pounds of thrust. In between were Suzuki 2.5hp to the 83 pounds of thrust, the 2.5hp Yamaha 78 pounds of thrust and 2.6hp Parsun to 70 lbs of thrust.
Next test of consumption Fuel was. At full speed – 5.75 knots, the best outboard motors were 2.5hp 2.5hp Yamaha and Suzuki's d'au least 20%. The worst was The 2.6hp Parsun. When the throttles were eased and the boat was cruising the comparison of fuel consumption was less obvious, the difference of only 10%. All these figures are 4-stroke engines. However, according to figures previously recorded for two races in circumstances Similar, more engines were up to 50% less fuel at full speed. Very thirsty! Remember two stroke outboard engines are still available second-hand.
Then the weight of each outboard motor was compared. Four stroke engines are heavier than the old 2 strokes because of the engine part etc. The Mercury, Mariner, Tohatsu env, Yamaha and all Parsun weighed. From 38 to 41 lb (18 kg) .. However, Suzuki 2.3hp Honda 2.5hp weighed much least 28 lb (12.5 kg.).
The price of each outboard motor was then compared. It was difficult to be precise as discounts and offers to sell are still evolving.
Although the Parsun was the cheapest and it is virtually identical in the same engine as the Yamaha 2.5hp, it is not as good. It's like me following a recipe from Gordon Ramsay, to the letter, but when compared side by side you just know its going to be much better. The Chinese are capable of copying, like the Japanese did before them, but they do not have it right yet!
Finally a little more about each used outboard motor tested. Mercury, Mariner and Tohatsu are the same engine. Starting parameters for the accelerator are easy to understand with the throttle stop button and clearly labeled. The essence of the tap on / off is not so clear. All these engines of the gears. Ahead neutral and then using the 360 degree rotation, you can get thrust into reverse. There are 4 recline positions and shallow water capability. Oil levels can be easily verified by watching the indicator on the side of the hood.
Yamaha 2.5hp was as easy to understand the parameters start and stop, but the oil level gauge was out of sight under the cover the motor housing. As with Mercury outboard 2.5hp Yamaha has the gears, forward and neutral with a rotation of 360 degrees. Unlike mercury, which has a shear pin, Yamaha has a rubber hub propeller, so no shear pin at the break.
The 2.5hp Suzuki is as above, but with the dipstick easily found on the side of the cover. The propeller shear pin with a spare stored in the bonnet.
The 2.3hp Honda is not cooled, as all the outboard motors of other tests. It is air cooled and has no gears. Instead it uses a centrifugal clutch. This makes the departure maneuver and more difficult than others. You just need a little getting used to it. The gauge oil is out of sight under the hood. The propeller with a shear pin pieces kept in the hood.
Finally, the 2.6hp Parsun, a copy of the Yamaha 2.5hp but not as good. However, it is the cheapest of the engine when new. Fuel consumption was the biggest draw back.
